Objective: Design and implement a learning venue for technology-based simulation in the area of dementia care.

Methodological approach: Systematic research will be undertaken concerning existing technology-focused care simulation laboratories (skills labs) and working groups in Germany, Austria and Switzerland that deal with the topic of nursing at the interface of technology and simulation or application of technology in teaching. This is followed by shadowing sessions and situational discussions with the working groups. A network will be formed in order to provide academic and technical support to the design and development of SimDeC in connection with expert workshops. Systematic reviews will be prepared in order to develop a better understanding of the current state of research on the use of virtual reality and other technology-based educational tools. In addition, a concept analysis will be carried out regarding the term “simulation” in the area of dementia care. A flat will be rented for implementing SimDeC, and a research position will be created to develop and operate it. SimDeC will be embedded in the curriculum and made publicly accessible.

Current status: The research and shadowing sessions at existing technology-focused care simulation laboratories (skills labs) have been conducted and completed. The systematic review on the use of virtual reality as an educational tool in the area of dementia care was published in the Nurse Education Today journal. Publication of the second review on other technology-focused educational tools is in preparation. The concept analysis is in the analysis phase. To date, two of three expert workshops have been held. Due to the current situation with COVID-19, the third workshop will be postponed to autumn 2020. The flat has been rented, and the research position has been filled. The partial results are continuously disseminated at national and international conferences (as at: 04/2020).
