Knowledge dissemination model for the area of dementia care

Objective: Develop a model for the sustainable implementation of nursing interventions in the area of dementia care.

Methodological approach: A systematic review will be prepared in order to identify described facilitators and barriers to the implementation of nursing interventions in the area of dementia care. The facilitators and barriers elicited will be discussed in focus group interviews with practising caregivers in long-term care. The results will form the starting point for developing a model for the sustainable implementation of nursing interventions in the area of dementia care.

Current status: The systematic review was published in the BMC Geriatrics journal. Its methodological accompanying research is currently being undertaken retrospectively. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the focus group interviews will be conducted and analysed in early summer 2020. The partial results are continuously disseminated at national and international conferences (as at: 04/2020).

Learning venue for technology-based simulation

Objective: Design and implement a learning venue for technology-based simulation in the area of dementia care.

Methodological approach: Systematic research will be undertaken concerning existing technology-focused care simulation laboratories (skills labs) and working groups in Germany, Austria and Switzerland that deal with the topic of nursing at the interface of technology and simulation or application of technology in teaching. This is followed by shadowing sessions and situational discussions with the working groups. A network will be formed in order to provide academic and technical support to the design and development of SimDeC in connection with expert workshops. Systematic reviews will be prepared in order to develop a better understanding of the current state of research on the use of virtual reality and other technology-based educational tools. In addition, a concept analysis will be carried out regarding the term “simulation” in the area of dementia care. A flat will be rented for implementing SimDeC, and a research position will be created to develop and operate it. SimDeC will be embedded in the curriculum and made publicly accessible.

Current status: The research and shadowing sessions at existing technology-focused care simulation laboratories (skills labs) have been conducted and completed. The systematic review on the use of virtual reality as an educational tool in the area of dementia care was published in the Nurse Education Today journal. Publication of the second review on other technology-focused educational tools is in preparation. The concept analysis is in the analysis phase. To date, two of three expert workshops have been held. Due to the current situation with COVID-19, the third workshop will be postponed to autumn 2020. The flat has been rented, and the research position has been filled. The partial results are continuously disseminated at national and international conferences (as at: 04/2020).

Technology road map for the area of dementia care

Objective: Develop a Swiss technology road map on the use and potential of assistive technologies in the care and nursing of persons with dementia.

Methodological approach: Literature-based and empirical research methods will be used to develop the technology road map. In the process, the needs of persons with dementia and those of their family members, as well as the effects and the impact of robotically assisted interventions for persons with dementia will be investigated on the basis of two systematic reviews. In addition, systematic research will be undertaken concerning existing academic experts and national advocacy groups in order to recruit persons for expert interviews. The results will form the starting point for the development of a technology road map for the area of dementia care.

Current status: A systematic review on the needs of persons with dementia and of those of their family members with respect to assistive technologies was published in the Pflege journal. The second systematic review on the effects and the impact of robotically assisted interventions for persons with dementia is currently undergoing peer review for an international journal. The interviews with the experts have been conducted and are currently being analysed. The partial results are continuously disseminated at national and international conferences (as at: 04/2020).

Dementia Care Research Symposium

Objective: Design and conduct the Dementia Care Research Symposium and embed it for the long term.

Methodological approach: A research network will be formed for designing and conducting the Dementia Care Research Symposium and embedding it for the long term.

Current status: The research network for designing and conducting the Dementia Care Research Symposium was formed by Professor Gabriele Meyer (Institute for Health and Nursing Science of the Medical Faculty, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg) and Professor Hanna Mayer (Department of Nursing Science of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Vienna). The first symposium was held on 25 November 2019 at the FHS St.Gallen. The second symposium is currently planned for 25 March 2021 at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Halle (Saale), Germany. The partial results are continuously disseminated at national and international conferences (as at: 04/2020).

Preparation of information suitable for persons with dementia

Objective: Develop requirements for the preparation of information on the Internet suitable for persons with dementia.

Methodological approach: The current state of knowledge with respect to the preparation of information suitable for persons with dementia will be researched and analysed as part of a systematic review. By means of interviews, persons with dementia will be asked about the preparation of information that is suitable for them.

Current status: The research of existing knowledge platforms has been completed. The systematic review on preparation of information suitable for persons with dementia was published in the HeilberufeSCIENCE journal. The interviews with persons with dementia have been conducted and are currently being analysed. The partial results are continuously disseminated at national and international conferences (as at: 04/2020).
